Lawrence Peter “Yogi” Berra
B: May 12, 1925, St. Louis, MO
A Hall of Famer, Berra was AL Most Valuable Player three times and, as a manager, led both AL and NL teams to the World Series. Statistically, Berra ranks as the greatest catcher and one of the 100 top players of all time. He appeared in 14 World Series and won 10 championships, including catching Don Larsen’s perfect game in 1956. Yogi grew up across the street from boyhood friend and fellow Italian-American catcher Joe Garagiola. During World War II, Berra served in the D-Day invasion. Yogi is beloved for his unique quotes, such as, “If you see a fork in the road, take it.”
