Bernardo “Bernie” Carbo
B: Aug 5, 1947, Detroit, MI
The Reds took Bernie in the inaugural 1965 draft, ahead of Johnny Bench. In his 1970 rookie season, Carbo was The Sporting News Rookie of the Year. Carbo stroked a dramatic pinch-hit three-run homer in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series, tying the score and setting the table for Carlton Fisk’s legendary game-winning homer in the bottom of the twelfth. A member of the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame, Carbo now devotes his life to the Diamond Club Christian Ministry, a youth outreach program combining baseball and drug abuse prevention.
