Albert Francis “Al” Gionfriddo
B: Mar 8, 1922, Dysart, PA — D: Mar 14, 2003, Solvang, CA
Despite a brief career in the big leagues, Al was involved in two famous plays in baseball history. In Game 4 of the 1947 World Series, Gionfriddo scored when the Dodgers Cookie Lavagetto’s pinch hit double broke up the Yankees Bill Bevens’ no hitter with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth. In Game 6, the Dodgers led 8-5. With two men on, Joe DiMaggio drove the ball to deep to left and Gionfriddo, a defensive replacement, reached over the fence and caught it. Famously, DiMaggio kicked the dirt in frustration. Ironically, Gionfriddo never made it back to the majors after the 1947 World Series.
