Harry Arthur “Cookie” Lavagetto
B: Dec 1, 1912, Oakland, CA — D: Aug 10, 1990, Orinda, CA
As the pinch hitter in Game 4 of the 1947 World Series, Lavagettos double scored Al Gionfriddo and Eddie Mixsis and ruined Bill Bevens’ no-hitter, giving the Dodgers a win over the Yankees. It was his last big-league at-bat. A third baseman for the Pirates and Dodgers in a ten-year career, Cookie missed four seasons to serve in World War II. Lavagetto became a Dodger coach in 1951 and, in 1957, manager of the Washington Senators, which became the Minnesota Twins making him the first manager in Twins history. From 1962 to 1967 he coached for the Mets and Giants.
