Ernesto Natali Lombardi
B: 4/06/08 in Oakland, CA — D: Sep 26, 1977, Santa Cruz, CA
Ernie was a Hall of Fame catcher for Brooklyn, the Braves, Reds and Giants during a 17-year career. Remembered for his long nose “one of his nicknames was “Schnozz”, Lombardi won the 1938 NL MVP award and led the Reds to the World Series title in 194. Lombardi was arguably the slowest man to ever play major league ball. Infielders played in the outfield and threw him out on grounders. Sadly, Ernie is frequently remembered for being knocked unconscious “Lombardi’s Snooze” in a home plate collision that allowed Joe DiMaggio to score the winning run in Game 4 of the 1939 World Series.
