Salvatore Anthony Maglie
B: Apr 26, 1917, Niagara Falls, NY — D: Dec 28, 1992, Niagara Falls, NY
Maglie was known as “The Barber,” because he pitched inside, close to the batters chin. He said, “When I’m pitching, the plate is mine.” To look more fierce to batter, Maglie sported a five o’clock shadow when he pitched. After spending several years in the Mexican League, Maglie pitched for three New York City baseball teams: the Giants, Dodgers and Yankees. In 1956, he finished second in balloting for the Cy Young Award, and was second in MVP voting. After retirement, Maglie became pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox and the expansion Seattle Pilots.
