Aug Rodney Mancuso
B: Dec 5, 1905, Galveston, TX — D: Oct 26, 1984, Houston, TX
During his 17-year career, Gus was a catcher for the Cardinals, Giants, Cubs, Dodgers and Phillies. His younger brother, Frank, also was a major league catcher in the 1940s. Giants manager Bill Terry credited Mancuso with being the major force in moving New York from sixth place in 1932 to the 1933 World Series. That year, Gus placed sixth in balloting for the Most Valuable Player in the National League. An All-Star in 1935 and 1937, Mancuso was the Giants’ regular through the pennant seasons of 1936-37 before falling into a platoon role. After retirement, he served as a coach for the Cincinnati Reds.
