Alfred Manuel Martin, Jr.
B: May 16, 1928, Berkeley, CA — D: Dec 25, 1989, Port Crane, NY
Billy Martin is buried in Hawthorne, New York, about 150 feet from the grave of Babe Ruth. His headstone bears his self-composed epitaph: I may not have been the greatest Yankee to put on the uniform but I was the proudest. After his playing career, which included an All-Star season, Billy managed the Yankees five different times, leading the team to the AL pennant in 1976 and a World Series victory in 1977. He also won division championships while managing four other teams. Fiercely competitive, Martin argued with umpires and team owners, but turned losing teams into winners. The Yankees have retired his uniform number 1.
