Robert John Valentine
B: May 13, 1950, Stamford, CT
Manager of Japan’s Chiba Lotte Marines, Valentine is the most successful American to manage in Japanese baseball, leading them to the Japan Series championship in 2005. While playing for the Anaheim Angels in 1973, a multiple compound leg fracture interrupted Bobby’s rise to stardom. He played until 1979. Valentine managed the Rangers (1985–1992) and took the Mets (1996–2002) to the 2000 World Series against New York Yankees. Valentine owns Bobby V’s, a sports bar in Stamford, CT and Arlington, Texas that claims it was the first to serve a sandwich in a tortilla wrap. Valentine’s father-in-law is former Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca.
